Patterns of the Home…

My dad recently acknowledged how much his sisters and brother reminded him of his mother and father. And He noted how much he was like his dad as well. As much as they all had left their broken home early and made their own paths in life, It was becoming obvious that they had inevitably returned to a clear and visible resemblance to their parents.

For the past century, progressive educators have made a clear effort to separate children from parents, ultimately separating us from our history and forefathers. The culture, beliefs and traditions of the past are vilified including, if not especially, the perspectives of parents and elders. At Knox we reject this philosophy. Within these walls, we hold that a child's education should come from their parents (Duet. 6:4-9, Eph. 6:4). Nothing can replace the patterns and habits developed in the home.

This means that there are very important and practical steps that we should all be taking in our homes to educate and pass on to our children the way of life we are attempting to buttress here at school. We should strive to eat at least one meal a day together, and take time during that meal to discuss the day and pray with each other. Read or listen to stories and fairytales together and discuss their importance. You might even combine these things by adding some reading, devotions or singing to your mealtime routine.

Ideals are lofty and often seem unattainable. I can readily say that my home has rarely achieved what would qualify as a YouTube or Pinterest-worthy familytime post. Nevertheless, we have found semi-regular peace in our home by pulling out candles for Saturday evening Sabbath dinner, saying the Lord's Prayer at mealtimes, listening to stories on juniorclassicspodcast.com, and reading a chapter in Proverbs together. We enjoy Little House on the Prairie, the Cosby Show, and the Waltons. And we pray together.

Knox Academy exists to strengthen your efforts to educate your children in the paideia of the Lord. What we do at school, we do with great conviction because we know that a healthy society consists of healthy families. We want to support you and your home.
